Making Tax Digital is here.

If you're self-employed or a landlord, you'll need software to keep digital records, send HMRC four quarterly updates a year and file a final declaration by 31 January. When it starts depends on your qualifying income: your turnover from self-employment and property, before expenses.

How it works

Set it up once. We'll handle the rest.

No uploads, no data entry. Your records stay up to date in the background, and the app asks you only when it needs you.

  1. 01

    Connect your bank and email

Link your accounts through regulated open banking and give us read-only access to your inbox. It takes about five minutes, once.

  2. 02

    We do the admin

Every transaction is sorted into the right HMRC category. Receipts are found in your email or snapped with your camera, then matched automatically.

  3. 03

    Check, confirm, file

Before each quarterly update we run an accountant-style check. You see exactly what will be sent, then file in a couple of taps.

The accountant check

An accountant's eye on every quarter.

Before you file, we check your records the way a good accountant would: missing receipts, personal spending marked as business, costs that have gone quiet, duplicates. Then we tell you in plain English what needs a look.

  • Every issue comes with a one-tap fix.
  • Nothing goes to HMRC until you've seen exactly what's being sent.

Your tax pot

Know exactly what to put aside.

Not a percentage you guessed. Your tax pot is worked out from your real numbers, including Income Tax, Class 4 National Insurance, student loan and payments on account, and it updates as you earn.

  • HMRC's own numbers

After each update we fetch HMRC's calculation and show it next to ours, and explain any difference.

  • Show your workings

Tap any figure to see exactly how it was worked out. No black boxes.

  • No January surprises

See what's due on 31 January and 31 July well in advance, and what to save each month to get there.

  • Thresholds on your radar

We'll warn you before you cross a line that matters, like VAT registration.

Features

Zero admin is the whole point.

Everything a sole trader needs for Making Tax Digital, without the accounting jargon.

  • Receipts find themselves

We search your inbox for the receipt behind each business payment and attach it. Nothing to forward, nothing to upload.

  • Snap paper receipts

One tap from anywhere in the app. We read the receipt and match it to the right payment, even if the payment hasn't cleared yet.

  • Business or personal, sorted

We spot personal spending, handle split costs like a 60% business phone bill, and remember your choices next time.

  • A guided year-end

Your final declaration becomes a short, plain-English interview. Most answers are already filled in from your records.

  • Ask anything

“How much did I spend on fuel this year?” “Why is my tax estimate up?” Get answers from your own data, with sources.

  • Fast, and always in sync

The app opens instantly and shows when each bank last synced. We'll nudge you well before a connection needs renewing.

Privacy and security

Your money and your inbox, handled with care.

  • Read-only access

We connect through a regulated open banking provider and can never move money. Email access is read-only too.

  • Only what matches

We search your inbox for receipts that match your business payments. Every other email is ignored and never stored.

  • Encrypted throughout

Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and your account is protected with two-factor sign-in.

  • You stay in control

Nothing is sent to HMRC without your say-so. See, export or delete your data whenever you like.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Do I need to use Making Tax Digital?
If you're a sole trader or landlord with qualifying income over £50,000, you've needed to since 6 April 2026. The threshold drops to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. Qualifying income is your turnover from self-employment and property, before expenses. Read our guide to Making Tax Digital.
Do I still need an accountant?
Most sole traders with straightforward finances won't. We keep your records, check them before every update and guide you through your year-end in plain English. If your situation is more complex, we'll offer an optional review by a qualified professional.
Will you read all my emails?
No. For each business payment without a receipt, we run a targeted search for that supplier around that date and amount. Only emails that match are processed and stored, and you can see and delete every one.
Is my bank data safe?
We use a regulated open banking provider, so we never see your bank login and can't move money. Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and your account is protected with two-factor sign-in.
Does it work with HMRC?
Soloist is being built to HMRC's standards for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. We'll complete HMRC's software recognition checks before we open to the public, and we'll say so here when we have.
Is this tax advice?
We provide software and general guidance, not personalised tax advice. You stay in control of everything sent to HMRC and remain responsible for your tax return.
